The appropriate pain management helps patients recover faster and also reduces the risk of developing certain complications. When pain is well controlled, patients are better able to participate in activities such as walking, deep breathing exercises and physical therapy and rehabilitation.
Surgical patients can expect to be continually assessed to ensure they are as comfortable as possible. Patients are asked to participate in their pain management by telling staff when they are uncomfortable and reporting their pain. When necessary, adjustments or changes to the pain management regimen are made.
